Editing
Recently, I've been line editing on a volunteer basis for a new fiction magazine.
In essence, the job involves reading through new short-fiction authors' works and fixing glaring spelling and grammatical errors. Minor stuff gets replaced then and there (like when they put 'there' when they mean 'their'), but major stuff has to be noted and sent back to the author for their input.
The interesting thing about it is that it's giving me a real hankerin' to write up my old mud concept's backstory in novel (or serialized short story) format.
However, in its current form, I doubt that it would pass muster with modern readers. I've done the initial arc concepts, but hadn't really thought out certain events. I need to do some contemplating about how those events might take place in reality. I don't want any serious technical howlers in the text.
I'm thinking that I may need to pick up a copy of Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed for my library.
